Join us for the Community Health Champion Training Session on Tuesday 20th May 2025 at Halo Leisure Centre, Leominster, and be part of a movement that’s saving lives!

What Are Community Health Champions?

Community Health Champions are people who are passionate about improving health outcomes in their communities. They want to learn more and share with others the importance of cancer screening, early diagnosis, and lifestyle changes in preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Champions may have personal experiences with these conditions or simply a commitment to raising awareness.

As a Community Health Champion, you will:

  • Start conversations about how lifestyle changes can reduce cancer and CVD risks.
  • Raise awareness about cancer screenings (e.g., breast, bowel, and cervical) and common CVD conditions.
  • Bust myths, share facts, and provide reassurance in your community.
  • Signpost people to local health services and support them in accessing resources.
  • Actively listen, provide feedback on local health needs, and help us improve services.

No prior experience is needed—full training and ongoing support will be provided by Healthwatch Herefordshire!

We’re looking for individuals who:

  • Are passionate about raising awareness in their communities.
  • Are willing to start conversations about cancer, cardiovascular disease, and preventative measures.
  • Can provide insights from their community to help shape future services.
  • Can offer their time flexibly, whether it’s a few conversations or participating in awareness events.

What You’ll Gain:

  • A 3 hour training session on cancer and CVD prevention, screenings, and starting impactful conversations.
  • Access to helpful resources and ongoing support from Healthwatch Herefordshire.
  • Opportunities to grow your role, from community awareness activities to paid champion roles.

Looking After Your Eyes: Eye Health

Our eyes are one of the most vital organs, helping us navigate the world around us. But eye health is often overlooked—until a problem arises. Whether it’s regular check-ups, managing long-term conditions like glaucoma, or getting help in an emergency, knowing where to turn is key.
Why Eye Health Matters

Many eye conditions develop slowly, meaning symptoms might not be noticeable straight away. Regular eye tests can help spot early signs of problems like cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy—often before they start to affect your vision. Early detection can make all the difference in treatment and outcomes.

Even if you think your vision is fine, it's recommended that adults have an eye test every two years. Children and people over 60, or those with certain medical conditions, may need more frequent checks.

Common Signs You Shouldn't Ignore:
-Sudden changes in vision
-Blurred or double vision
-Persistent eye pain or redness
-Seeing floaters or flashes
-Headaches linked to eye strain

If you experience any of these, it’s best to seek advice promptly.
